It looks like Xbox Game Pass for consoles is getting a major overhaul, and unfortunately, it’s not good news for many subscribers. In the latest shake-up, Microsoft has retired the Xbox Game Pass for console subscription, replacing it with a « Standard » plan. This new plan offers the same benefits as the Game Pass Core, including access to a large catalog of games. However, the exclusivity of « Day One » releases is no longer part of the package for console users. Instead, this perk is now reserved for PC Game Pass and Ultimate subscribers.
The End of the 36-Month Subscription
Microsoft’s restructuring means that you can no longer sign up for the Game Pass console subscription. For those who are already subscribed with automatic renewals, the service will continue—at least for the time being. Previously, users could extend their Game Pass console subscriptions for up to 36 months. But starting September 18, Xbox will cap the maximum extension to just 13 months. This change comes in conjunction with a price increase for subscriptions set to take effect on September 12.
In anticipation of these price hikes, many gamers were planning to purchase extended subscriptions to lock in current rates. Unfortunately, console Game Pass subscribers will have fewer opportunities to do this now. Microsoft has stated that this new limitation won’t be applied retroactively, so if you already have more than 13 months of Game Pass console, you won’t be penalized. If you were thinking of extending your subscription, now might be the best time to act!
Is This Part of Microsoft’s « Console-Free » Strategy?
While it’s tempting to speculate, this change might be part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to push towards a « console-free » gaming future. Much like Netflix phased out its ad-supported Essential plan, the console Game Pass could be on a path to gradual obsolescence. Microsoft continues to highlight Game Pass as a cross-platform ecosystem, partnering with Nvidia GeForce Now and even launching on Amazon’s Fire TV Stick. As Microsoft plans to reduce console sales in favor of digital and cloud gaming, it seems the console-free future is becoming increasingly real.
With these shifts, it’s clear that Microsoft is re-aligning its focus towards a more digital-centric gaming experience, making it crucial for current subscribers to stay informed and act quickly if they want to maximize their benefits.
