Samsung is set to introduce satellite connectivity features in its One UI 7 update, aligning with advancements seen in the iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS feature. While Apple’s system uses satellites for emergency messaging, Samsung aims to provide a similar capability through its upcoming software updates.

Advancing Emergency Communication

Initially introduced by Apple with the iPhone 14, the Emergency SOS feature allows users to send emergency messages via satellite when out of cellular range. This has become a crucial tool for hikers and adventurers who may find themselves in remote areas without coverage. Apple’s latest iOS 18 beta even extends this functionality to regular messaging with end-to-end encryption.

Android and Satellite Connectivity

Android devices have an Emergency SOS feature, but it currently lacks satellite support. However, rumors suggest Google is collaborating with T-Mobile to bring satellite connectivity to Android 15, potentially featuring in the upcoming Pixel 9. This advancement is expected to include an Exynos Modem 5400 capable of satellite connectivity, with UI designs already leaked showing how users might connect to satellites.

Samsung’s Satellite Plans

Recent updates to Samsung apps indicate forthcoming satellite connectivity support. For example, code in Samsung’s Emergency SOS 15.5.00.14 build, Samsung Messages version 15.5.10.39, and Phone version 15.2.80 suggest users will be able to send emergency texts via satellite. The code specifies that if users are out of range, the device will connect via satellite to send an emergency text.

Interestingly, the code also reveals that Samsung Messages may not support satellite texting initially. Instead, users will need to default to Google Messages for satellite communication. This isn’t unexpected, as Google is integrating this feature into Android 15, and Samsung is building on top of it.

Upcoming Announcements and Features

Further details about Android 15 and Samsung’s One UI 7 are anticipated at the next Made By Google event. This event should provide more information on the timeline for the stable release of One UI 7 and the integration of satellite connectivity.

In summary, Samsung is gearing up to enhance its emergency communication capabilities by incorporating satellite connectivity in its One UI 7 update. This move aligns with broader trends in the smartphone industry, ensuring that users can stay connected and safe, even in the most remote locations.
